In partnership with the International English Language Institute (IELI) , Hunter College Continuing Education offers high-quality English language learning courses. These courses prepare learners for entry into American colleges and universities, accelerate networking and career opportunities, enrich interpersonal experiences, and boost self-confidence by developing your English accuracy, fluency, and confidence.
Available as a full certificate for $1,500 or individual classes for $600
- This advanced certificate is designed for professionals who are seeking to perfect and polish the English Language skills they need for a workplace environment.
- Students who take this program usually are working professionals looking to fine-tune their skills for the workplace.
- Classes will be broken down into 8-week classes: Pronunciation, Grammar, Writing.

English Certificate Program Information
Our English courses and certificate programs cater to a diverse range of learners. We offer comprehensive courses, from Beginner English to Bridge-to-College Level English. We welcome New York City residents, visitors on tourist visas , diplomats, and international students. We are authorized to issue I-20 forms . After completing the program, you may apply for undergraduate or graduate-level programs at Hunter College, and we’ll waive the TOEFL requirement. Our English for Family and Friends program offers personalized instruction tailored to your or your group’s particular goals and learning outcomes.
Pronunciation: (20 hours $600)
Course Objectives: Students will learn how
- To become more familiar with using vivid, descriptive language while speaking English
- To learn to deliver prepared formal presentations on a variety of topics in English
- To pronounce American English words correctly
- Interjections and intonation
- Syllables with unstressed vowels (represented by the schwa)
- Words linked by final /s/ and /z/ sounds
- Syllables stress
- Words stress in compound nouns
- Stress and pauses indicate thought groups
- Content words and sentence stress
- Function words and sentence stress
- Vowel length with voiced and voiceless consonants
Each student will engage in a personalized conference with the instructor to address their unique pronunciation requirements, ensuring a tailored learning experience. Reading is a crucial component of the pronunciation class and must be consistently practiced. As the Course progresses, the reading material will become more challenging. Your speaking and pronunciation skills will be evaluated to gauge your progress.
Grammar (20 hours $600)
This is for people who are currently in the U.S. on a B1/B2 visitor visa, J-1, or another type of non-immigrant visa and would like to change their status to F-1 student status while they are in the U.S.
Course Objectives:
- to learn authentic American English grammar
- to distinguish the grammar typical in conversation vs grammar typical in writing
- to work independently to refine their respective grammar skills
Writing (20 hours $600)
Course Objectives: Students will learn how
- To gain confidence in writing in American English using formal and informal structures
- To apply nuts-and-bolts strategies for improving writing
- To combine sentences through coordination and subordination
- To identify adequately developed paragraphs
- To provide transitions in writing
- To identify, understand, and correct errors in writing
- To edit essays
