Certificate in Interpretation Studies
This certificate concentrates on employment in legal and medical settings. Classes can be taken only by those enrolled in a Certificate in Translation or Interpretation Studies. To request an exception, please contact the main office at (212) 650-3850 or [email protected].
Program Information
- Duration of the Program - The program consists of 6 courses; it takes 1 year to complete. The minimum passing grade is a B.
- Requirements: - Fluency in both English and Spanish is needed, including strong writing skills in both languages. Students must take a placement test and pass an oral interview.
- Tuition: - $4,200 plus one-time $25 registration fee.
- Payment Plan: - Down payment of $1,565 + 7 payments of $380.

Interpretation Studies Program Details
Introduction to Translation (TSINTTRA)
Learn the basic skills needed to translate texts, improve technique, utilize resources, and address general challenges. The class covers legal translation, business and financial translation, translation for advertisement, medical translation, and editing and proofreading public service announcements.
Fundamentals of Interpretation (TSFUNINT)
This class introduces students to the world of community interpreting, specifically the different modes of interpreting in different settings. Course is conducted in English and Spanish.
Interpretation in Medical Settings (TSINTMED)
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Interpretation.
This course expands on the topics covered in Introduction to Translation Studies for a more in depth look at legal, business and medical translation. The class covers news and literary translation.Interpretation in Legal Settings (TSINTLEG)
Prerequisite: Fundamentals of Interpretation.
This course focuses on the court interpreter profession in the U.S. The class covers court and legal terminology, as well as colloquial language as it relates to the concepts that appear in courtrooms and depositions. Issues that affect defendants or respondents with limited English proficiency within the courtroom culture will also be addressed.Note Taking for Interpreting (TSNOTTAK)
This course emphasizes the importance of note-taking for interpreters. Several techniques are reviewed so that students develop their own practical method.
Spanish Grammar Review (TSSPAGRA)
This course reviews basic Spanish grammar concepts such as common parts of speech, tenses and sentence structure, and emphasizes comprehension and text analysis. This course is conducted in Spanish and enables students to have a better understanding of Spanish as a source language for translation and interpretation.
